Ximenez-Fatio House Archaeological Dig

An archaeological dig currently underway at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum in St. Augustine's historic district is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays through March 14, 2015. The excavation is directed by City of St. Augustine Archaeologist Carl Halbirt.

The public is invited to attend the scheduled events at the dig from 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. This is an opportunity for visitors and residents alike to witness first-hand the behind-the-scenes activities of an ongoing archaeological dig. 

Special hands-on activity stations will be provided by the Florida Public Archaeology Network on these themes each week:

February 17 - 21: Prehistoric Ceramics

February 24 - 28: Nails and Architecture

March 3 - 7: Middens (ancient garbage!)

March 10 - 14: Ground Penetrating Radar, visualizing the unseen

Admission: The public excavation is free.

Where? Ximenez-Fatio House Museum located at 20 Aviles Street in St. Augustine.

When? 11 am - 3 pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from February 3 - March 14, 2015. 

History of the Ximenez-Fatio House: The Ximenez-Fatio House dates back 1798 when Andres Ximenez and his wife Juana built the home. The home was purchased by Margaret Cook in 1830 after Florida became a U.S. territory. The home was then purchased by Louisa Fatio in 1855, who had previously operated 2 boarding houses. This historic home has changed many hands and remains a figure of the city's past.
