Sound Art Exhibit

Explore the medium of "sound art" at this wide-ranging exhibition at Flagler College's Crisp-Ellert Art Museum.

Please Note: This event is from 2016

The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College presents a special exhibit on sound art from September 2 to November 22, 2016. The exhibit opening will take place during the First Friday Art Walk on September 2, 2016, from 5 to 9 p.m., and the exhibit will be on display through November 22, 2016.

This special exhibit is curated by artists Michael Dickins and Barry Jones and organized by Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. The work of seventeen artists from around the world will be featured: Phillip Andrew Lewis, Olivia Block, Curt Cloning, McLean Fahnestock, Josh Gumiela, Brian Harnetty, Morgan Higby-Flowers, Aaron Hutchinson, Peter Kay, Kris Neely with Lynn Rhodes, Will Owen, Greg Pond and Jesse Thompson, Matt Roberts, Steve Roden, Jason Sloan, and Nathan Wolek.

These artists use sound in innovative ways, from manipulating recordings and "found sound" to creating sound through data-based processes and using the environment to create sound sculptures. The acceptance of sound art as a distinct medium has evolved through the work of Luigi Russolo, who first formulated the concept of using everyday "noise" as an element in music compositions in 1913, Pierre Schaeffer during the 1940s and 1950s in Paris, and John Cage, whose focus on silence and random noise transformed 20th century music. In his book, Sound Art, artist Alan Licht details how these musical concepts have grown to become an interdisciplinary medium during the same period.
