1812 War declared on England by the United States.
1812-13

Rebellion by disgruntled Floridians, supported by U.S. armed forces, failes to take Spanish East Florida.
1819

Spain signs Adams-Onis treaty, ceading Florida to the United States
1821

Florida is officially annexed as a territory by the United States on July Tenth
1825 Castillo renamed Fort Marion.
1833 The protestant Episcopal Church is consecrated.
1835-42 The current sea wall is built by the United States Government.
1836-42 The Seminole Indian Wars
1837

Osceola and seventy warriors captured just south of St. Augustine and imprisoned in Fort Marion.
1845 Florida becomes a state.
1861

Florida secedes from the Union and Confederates seize Fort Marion.
1862 Unionists reoccupy and hold St. Augustine until end of Civil War.
1875-87 Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache Indians imprisoned at the fort.
1884


The War Department allocates funds to restore Fort Marion. This act represents the first instance of Federal funds allocated for restoration and historic preservation in the U.S.
1885-88 Henry M. Flagler builds the Ponce de Leon Hotel.
1888 The St. Augustine Cathedral is rebuilt after a fire.
