History of Washington Oaks Gardens

Mr. Owen D. Young, chairman of the board of General Electric Corporation and RCA, bought the land in 1936 with his wife, Louise Powis Clark. They built their house in 1938 and it soon became a winter retreat for the couple.

Mrs. Young maintained and tended the historic Rose Garden and ponds on the property, but eventually gave it to the state of Florida before her passing in 1965.

The grand Washington Oak, estimated to be between 200-300 years old, is one of the sturdiest trees in the state. It now stands at the center of the gardens for all to appreciate its beauty.
