  • Whetstone Chocolate Factory began as a small, family-run ice cream parlor in 1966, today known as Tedi's Olde Tyme Ice Cream located in the historic district of St. Augustine. Now they have branched out to multiple Whetstone Chocolates locations, including this one and the historic downtown location on St. George Street.

Founders Henry and Esther Whetstone began creating delicious chocolates and fudge creations in their home kitchen at night, and after cornering the ice cream market, the couple embarked on creating a chocolate brand. Their commitment to quality and enduring work ethic led to one of St Augustine's greatest success stories, as Whetstone Chocolates and the Whetstone Chocolate Factory was born in St Augustine, Florida.

Today the Chocolate Factory Store in historic downtown offers their wide variety of fresh and delicious chocolates, as well as tours of the factory. A maximum of 25 people are allowed on tours so it is recommended to call for reservations. Chocolate lovers from all over the country come to St. Augustine to experience the luscious chocolate created by the Whetstone Chocolatiers. Explore the business of making and tasting decadent desserts.

The good: There was lots of info about making chocolate, the history of the company, and a few samples were given. The bad: the factory is empty on Sundays, which renders the tour lackluster, even downright boring. Of course there was no discount offered to compensate for that.

Went on tour expecting to sample a piece of chocolate at the end of a quick run through the factory not getting close to the products. Wrong! We sampled FIVE chocolates: milk, white, two different dark and one artisan chocolate (orange). We walked through the factory where four employees were busy making chocolate shells, alligators, gelato, the tempering chocolate and were almost close enough to run our fingers through the liquid chocolate :). The tour was very informative and the host/tour guide was fabulous. Thank you Joe for a great tour of the facility !!!!!
