Flagler College presents "St. Augustine's 450th: History and Commemoration in America's Oldest City," as part of the Ideas and Images lecture series. The lecture will take place at the Lewis Auditorium on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.

Dr. J. Michael Francis, professor of history and Hough Family chair of Florida Studies at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg, will lead the discussion, and will talk about the period of St. Augustine's founding and the legacy of its founder, Perdro Menendez de Aviles. He will reference some of the debates that affect our understanding of this period and how it is remembered.

Dr. Francis has served as a research fellow at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and at the Library of Congress. He was appointed by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar as one of just two historians on the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission. He is also the curator of a traveling exhibit entitled, "Imagining La Florida: Ponce de Leon and the Quest for the Fountain of Youth," and his most recent book is Murder and Martyrdom in Spanish Florida.
